People move houses all times of year, but the majority of those who do, do so between May and September, when the weather is warmer. Do you fit into that category? If so, you may want to take note of a few of these tips to help make your move an easy (well, easier) one!
Start packing long before the season begins. If there is a chance of moving on the horizon, start going through unused items long before the actual move! Start with games or toys that have not been touched in ages. Then move to seasonal clothing. (If it is summer, you won’t be needing the winter items). If the knickknacks are not a focal point of your room, start wrapping and packing, as that is what takes the longest!
Use this in-between time to go through everything. Starting early will give you plenty of time to go through drawers, closets, shelves and storage tubs to decide what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of. This will make packing for the actual move a lot easier!
Plan ahead and pack necessities separately. If you are using a moving company, set a few items aside that you will need in case the moving truck does not show up as scheduled! There is nothing worse than being without clean undergarments because they are on a truck two states away. Pack up a few changes of clothes, some entertainment for the kids and pillows … and anything else you cannot live without.
The label maker (or permanent maker) is your best friend. There is no such thing as over-labeling when you move. Be descriptive on the outside of the box regarding its contents. While a short abbreviation makes sense to you at the moment, by the time it is unloaded at your new place, it may not. Use labels that include both room and content descriptions. Whatever method you choose, be detailed!
While moving season may not be your favorite, the end result will be worth it! Enjoy this new path in life… after you get all the socks put up, that is.
